- Also known as: Kali Harad, Laghu Harad, Chhoti Harad, Chebulic Myrobalan, Ink Nut, Hime.
- Scientific name: Terminalia chebula (The immature fruit of the Haritaki tree, harvested before the seed fully forms).
- What it’s known for: Its "Legendary Potency." Revered in ancient traditions as the "King of Medicines," the black variety consists of small, shriveled, seedless fruits that are more concentrated and easier to process than the mature yellow variety.
- Visual profile: Small, oblong, and ribbed fruits. Deep ebony-black to dark brown in color, with a hard, stone-like texture that becomes slightly glossy when processed.
- Flavor profile: A unique "Five-Flavor" experience—primarily astringent and bitter, followed by mild sourness, subtle pungency, and a lingering sweetness.
-
How to prepare:
Due to its hardness, it is best soaked overnight (1–2 fruits in water) to create a traditional infusion. Alternatively, it can be lightly sautéed in ghee or castor oil until it puffs, making it easier to grind. -
How it’s used:
A key ingredient in Triphala and classical herbal blends. Also used as a natural dye, digestive cleanser, and in traditional rituals and offerings. -
Quality profile:
Premium-grade fruits that are small, seedless, and naturally sun-dried. Characterized by their dense structure, high tannin content, and deep dark coloration—indicating strong potency and purity.
