  • Also known as: Neel Powder, Wasma Dust, Powdered Indigo, Nila Powder, Black Henna (Natural).

  • Scientific name: Indigofera tinctoria (The processed, fermented, and finely pulverized leaves of the true Indigo shrub).

  • The Botanical Science: While the "Dye Ball" is the traditional storage form, the Indigo Powder is the active "Ready-to-Use" state. The pigment, indigotin, is locked within the plant’s cellular structure. Milling it into an ultra-fine powder increases the surface area, allowing for near-instant hydration and release of the deep violet-blue chromophores.

  • Physical Characteristics: An extremely fine, soft powder with a unique matte, greenish-blue hue. When exposed to moisture and air (oxidation), it shifts into a rich, midnight indigo.

  • Sensory Profile: It carries a distinct, earthy, "fermented hay" aroma—a hallmark of authentic, naturally processed Indigo.

  • Historical Context: In the ancient beauty rituals of the Middle East and South Asia, Indigo powder (often called Wasma) was the essential partner to Henna. While Henna provided the fiery reds, Indigo provided the cool, dark "Raven" tones, allowing artisans to create a full spectrum of natural hair shades from auburn to deep black.

  • How to prepare: For Botanical Hair Toning, mix the powder with warm water (and a pinch of salt to help release the dye) until it reaches a yogurt-like consistency. Apply immediately after a henna treatment for the most traditional "Two-Step" coloring process.
