  • Also known as: Hanzal, Bitter Apple, Desert Gourd, Egusi, Bitter Cucumber, Vine of Sodom.

  • Scientific name: Citrullus colocynthis (A hardy, desert-dwelling vine in the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae).

  • What it’s known for: Its "Legendary Bitterness." Colocynth is a wild desert fruit that resembles a small, yellow-and-green watermelon but is famous for containing some of the most bitter compounds found in nature.

  • Visual Profile: Small, spherical gourds with a smooth, hard rind. When dried, they become lightweight and turn a dusty gold or straw-yellow color, often retaining beautiful marbled patterns.

  • How it’s used: Primarily a Traditional Decorative botanical; a "Guardian" fruit placed in storehouses to deter pests; used in the crafting of unique, rustic ornaments; and a foundational element in heritage-based botanical collections.

  • Important Note: This is a Non-Edible botanical. Due to its extreme, naturally occurring bitterness, it is used for topical, decorative, or traditional external applications only.
